Frequently Asked Questions About TRICARE Dental
Does Lamb Family Dental accept TRICARE dental insurance?
Yes. Lamb Family Dental accepts the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) administered by United Concordia in Boise, Idaho. We welcome active-duty family members, National Guard members, and Selected Reserve members. Call (208) 344-6300 to verify your enrollment and schedule your first visit.
Is TRICARE dental the same as TRICARE medical?
No. TRICARE dental and TRICARE medical are separate programs. TRICARE medical (TRICARE Prime, Select, etc.) covers doctor visits, hospital stays, and medical care. The TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) is a separate enrollment that covers dental care for eligible family members. TDP is administered by United Concordia, not by the same contractors that manage TRICARE medical. You must enroll in TDP separately to receive dental benefits.
Can military spouses use TRICARE dental at a civilian dentist?
Yes. The TRICARE Dental Program is designed for family members to use at civilian dental offices. Active-duty service members get dental care at military dental clinics on base, but spouses and children use TDP at civilian providers like Lamb Family Dental. You save the most money by visiting a TDP network provider. Our office is about 45 minutes from Mountain Home AFB, making us a convenient choice for military spouses living in the Boise and Meridian area.
What happened to the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program?
The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) ended on December 31, 2018. Starting in 2019, military retirees became eligible to enroll in dental plans through FEDVIP (the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program) instead. FEDVIP offers several dental plan choices, including GEHA Connection Dental, which we also accept. Visit our GEHA dental page for more information about FEDVIP coverage for military retirees.
Do E1 through E4 families get better TRICARE dental benefits?
Yes. Families of sponsors with a rank of E1 through E4 receive enhanced dental benefits under the TRICARE Dental Program. These enhanced benefits may include no deductible and higher coverage percentages on basic and major procedures. This means lower out-of-pocket costs for junior enlisted families. We verify your rank-based benefits when you call our office so you know exactly what you will owe.
How much does TRICARE dental cost per month?
TRICARE Dental Program premiums are very affordable compared to civilian dental insurance. Monthly premiums are typically $13 to $40 per month depending on your plan type (single or family) and whether you are an active-duty family member or Guard/Reserve member. Premiums are automatically deducted from the sponsor’s military pay. This is one of the most affordable dental plans available in the Boise area.
Does TRICARE dental cover braces or Invisalign?
Yes. The TRICARE Dental Program covers orthodontic treatment, including braces and Invisalign, at 50 percent up to a lifetime maximum of $1,750. This benefit applies to both children and adults. Orthodontic treatment requires prior authorization from United Concordia before it begins. We handle the pre-authorization process for you and provide a detailed cost estimate before starting treatment.
Can National Guard members use TRICARE dental?
Yes. Selected Reserve and National Guard members, including those at Gowen Field in Boise, are eligible to enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program. This coverage is especially valuable for Guard members who need regular civilian dental care between drill weekends. You and your family members can visit Lamb Family Dental using your TDP coverage just like active-duty family members can.
How do I find a TRICARE dentist near Mountain Home AFB?
You can search for TRICARE dental providers at United Concordia or tricare.mil/findadentist. Lamb Family Dental is located at 4255 N Eagle Rd in Boise, about 45 minutes from Mountain Home Air Force Base via I-84. Many military families stationed at Mountain Home choose our office because of our convenient Boise location and experience with TRICARE dental claims. Call (208) 344-6300 to schedule.
