It might sound like a straightforward tip, but there are ways to make teeth brushing more effective. Use these tips and tricks to get the most out of brushing your teeth each time.
Start with the right toothbrush:
Dr. Lamb and Dr. P. recommend using a soft bristled brush. These tend to be more gentle on the gums. When it comes to eclectic versus a regular toothbrush, that’s up to preference. But you can check out our post on the best electric toothbrushes for some suggestions.
Work Those Angles
A proper brushing method is all about the angle. Angle the brush down toward the base of the tooth, as this is where most of the debris sits. You definitely want to polish the entire surface, but focusing on the roots will be the most effective way to remove food and plaque build up.
How Long to Brush Teeth
Timing does matter when it comes to brushing your teeth. Be sure to spend at least 2 minutes working that brush.
Rinse and Don’t Forget the Tongue
Some folks out there claim that you should leave toothpaste on your teeth for added protection. There is little science to back this up. It would be akin to leaving soap on your skin after a shower.
Toothpaste
The right toothpaste will do the best work and you wont need to leave it on. Effective toothpaste is intended to work in the time you brush, leaving you with protection for several hours. We recommend a fluoride toothpaste. Read our article on how fluoride protects your teeth.
Brush More Than Once a Day
Frequency is important. We eat throughout the day, and so we should brush more than once a day too. People often brush first thing in the morning and once before bed. If you’re like Dr. Lamb, you might obsessively brush after every meal. For a more in-depth look, check out our article on “How Many Times a Day Should You Brush Your Teeth.”
